Some things to help you prepare for class

When Can You Train

San Joaquin Sheriff's Office does not explictly state this, but you should not get training from an approved vendor until after you have been notified by them that your CCW application has been approved and you should seek training. Once you have been approved make sure you get training from an approved CCW vendor. Gun Kraft is an approved San Joaquin Sheriff's Office CCW vendor.

Class Location and Times

Classes are taught at Elite Armory Plus in Tracy. The range is located at 7601 Eleventh St. Each day starts from 10am-12pm on the range followed by an hour break for lunch. New applicant classes then continue from 1 -7pm. Renewal classes continue from 1-3pm.

Allowed Pistols and Modifications

You may have up to three firearms on your permit. San Joaquin Sheriff's Office allows any legal modifications you want to your firearm.

Range Qualification

Holsters draw is not part of the qualification. Applicants must qualify with each firearm they intend to list on their CCW permit. The target is 12"x16". Passing score is 80% (24 of 30 rounds) inside the target. There is no time limit and you have two attempts to pass. Private coaching is available if you have difficulty meeting the requirements.

What to Bring (New Applicants, Day 1)

  • One pistol and four magazines
  • 100 rounds of ammunition for training
  • Eye/ear protection. We use earbud radio receivers on the range, so over the ear muffs are recommended. However you can use in-ear protection if you prefer and forego the receiver.
  • Gov't issued ID (eg. driver's license)
  • Snacks and drinks. We will break for lunch.

What to Bring (New Applicants, Day 2 and CCW Renewals)

  • The pistol(s) you will list on your CCW (up to three) and four magazines per pistol
  • 60 rounds per pistol for qual plus 100 rounds for training. (Ex: if you have two pistols of the same caliber that is 250 rounds total. If they are diferent calibers then 100 rounds for one and 200 rounds for the other.)

Please Don't Buy a Holster (Yet)

We will teach you how to draw from the holster and provide all needed equipment to do so. If you have not been taught how to draw I discourage you from trying to learn on your own beforehand. There is a good chance you will pick up some bad habits in doing so. It takes relatively few repetitions to form a habit (muscle memory) but once you do it takes more repetitions to change it. Holster draws aren't complex but I'd rather teach you the right way to begin with than spend time fixing bad habits. This also gives you the opportunity to try different holsters before buying your own, possibly saving you from buying one you later regret.

Student reviews:

  • "I really wasn't looking forward to the fact that 12/16 hours were going to be spent in the classroom and I would worry about having to stay awake. Man, was I wrong! Robin kept us very engaged with the combination of videos, demos, and hands on learning. The 16 hours flew by and actually left me wanting for more. If you're thinking about taking your CCW cert, I HIGHLY recommend Gun Kraft!"
  • "16 hrs sound like a long time, but after the class I immediately felt that I learned so much and wanted to learn more. Kept the class very engaged. Robin explained the why behind everything when he gave his best opinion. I was never tired or bored. All great information. His presentation and hands on tools and instructions were more than I expected."
  • "The class was truly excellent, very complete and presented in a logical fashion way that made it easy to understand and retain. This was an absolutely amazing course."
  • "I found myself very engaged every minute of the class. This is not a death by powerpoint type of block of instruction, but a highly hands-on class. I would highly recommend taking this course and I will definitely take my CCW renewal through Gun Kraft."
