Self-defense is more than pulling the trigger. Learn about the other 90%.

Our classes satisfy the CCW training requirements for Concord PD, Contra Costa, Morgan Hill PD, San Francisco PD, San Joaquin, San Jose PD and San Mateo 16 hour and 8 hour classes.

Important news: In December 2023 CA DOJ issued emergency rulemaking that requires all CCW instructors to be "CCW DOJ firearm instructor" certified or active/honorably retired LE with POST firearm instructor certification. As of this date the process to become a "CCW DOJ firearm instructor" is unclear and no one is currently approved. Gun Kraft's CCW class is taught by active LE with POST firearm instructor certs and therefore meets the instructor requirements.

Let's be honest--when you look for a CCW instructor your primary selection criteria are likely to be how soon is the class, how far away is it, and how much does it cost? The actual course content is maybe a distant fourth. After all, the point is to get the training certificate so you can get the CCW right? Picking any class is a blind guess where you hope it turns out and you can endure the class. It doesn't have to be that way.

The best possible outcome of any self-defense situation is when you and your loved ones can come out the other side safely without having to fire a shot. Learn about applicable laws, situational awareness, risk reduction and avoiding confrontation in addition to improving your shooting skills.

This class also satisfies the training requirement to apply for a non-resident CCW from Arizona and Florida. Carry concealed in 34 other states as well as California.

Learning Objectives

  • Pistol, holster selection
  • Holster draw (OWB, AIWB)
  • Dry fire exercises
  • Malfunction drills
  • Low-light techniques
  • California laws
  • Defensive tactics
  • Use of force encounters
  • Emergency medical care
  • ...and more

What to bring

  • The pistol(s) you will list on your CCW (up to three) and four magazines per pistol. Why at least four? After class you should have two loaded with your defensive rounds and at least two for practice.
  • Ammunition: see links below for agency-specific ammo requirements
  • Eye/ear protection (electronic earpro recommended)
  • Gov't issued ID (eg. driver's license)
  • Snacks and drinks. We will break for lunch.

If need for your agency's qual buy a simple holster (but please don't practice with it)

See the additional info links below if you're unsure whether you need a holster. We will teach you how to draw from the holster on the first day. If you have not been taught how to draw I discourage you from trying to learn on your own beforehand. There is a good chance you will pick up some bad habits in doing so. It takes relatively few repetitions to form a habit (muscle memory) but once you do it takes more repetitions to change it. Holster draws aren't complex but I'd rather teach you the right way to begin with than spend time fixing bad habits.

Buy a simple OWB holster like the Safariland 578 GLS or Bladetech Signature OWB Holster with adjustable paddle holster attachment accessory. Holsters that do not attach to your belt or are positioned behind the 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock position are not allowed for safety reasons. IWB holsters are allowed but must be stiff enough that they do not flex/collapse while wearing when empty. If your holster has a thumb break most likely it's poor quality.

Students must pass a live fire range qualification with a minimum passing score of 80%. Failure to pass can result in disqualification. You are strongly encouraged to practice the range qual prior to taking the class. Private coaching is available if you have difficulty meeting the requirements. (If you can consistently place all your shots in a letter size piece of paper at 7 yards you should pass the qual.)
